Tripping UP is a post-road trip photo diary of my last trip to the UP, or Upper Peninsula, of Michigan. And maybe some other places too, if time permits.
With this latest trip to the UP in 2016, (we made our first in 1992, then in 1997, 2000, 2002, and 2012), I realized this is my favorite vacation spot. I’ve spent nearly 2/3 of my life living in Great Lake states–Wisconsin (1961-62 and 1989-present), Indiana (1962-67) and New York (1969-71), and something about the greenness and wetness of the region is where I feel most at home.
The UP (which should be part of Wisconsin, damn you Toledo War) is the only piece of land where you can be surrounded by the three greatest of the Great Lakes, Michigan, Huron and Superior. In this latest trip, I discovered Lake Huron for the first time, at least in a very small part in St. Ignace. I want more!
And just a little trivia, the non-great lake gaps in the dates above are Massachusetts (1967-69) and Colorado (1971-1989).
